Teaching occupations are suitable for migration purposes have been listed on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) and Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL). Teaching as a pathway to PR. All levels of teaching, from preschool to secondary school, are on the medium to long-term skills shortage list in Australia. This makes it an excellent choice for those wishing to make the move to Australia permanently.
Teachers can apply for visas allowing migration to Australia under the general skilled program using visa subclass 189, 190, 489, or 491.
Teacher Skills Assessment
Teachers migrating to Australia are required to complete a teacher skills assessment through the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL). The AITSL will need to assess your qualifications against Australian Standards before you can apply for a Skilled Visa.
The Australian Visa Bureau will help you to work out if you’re qualified for a teaching job in Australia and the Migration Bureau lets you take a free assessment to see which visa category, you’re eligible under. The good news is teaching is on the Skilled Occupation list and this should allow you to apply for a skilled migration visa.
Requirements
To be considered suitably qualified as a Teacher in Australia you must have 4 years (full-time equivalent) of tertiary education. Therefore, you will have either:
4 years Bachelor of Education OR
3 years degree (any subject) AND 1 year PGCE/PGDE
You must demonstrate you have completed at least 45 days of supervised teaching practice as part of your compulsory initial teacher education program. This must be within the age range of students relevant to your nominated occupation. Work Experience does not count towards supervised teaching practice.
