What is the IELTS exam?
The IELTS is a language exam that tests the practitioner’s proficiency in English as the most widely used international language for business and study. There are two types of IELTS exams, the General training IELTS, and the Academic IELTS which assesses the candidate’s proficiency in academic English.
Both exams are divided into four sections that test the candidate’s skills for listening, reading, writing, and speaking

The Speaking and Listening tests are the same in both modules, but the Reading and Writing tests differ between the General and Academic modules.
For countries such as South Africa, where English is not considered to be the native language, those looking to immigrate will need to complete and pass the IELTS or TOEFL exam to prove proficiency in English.
